The weekend's birding kicked off by watching 4 Black Terns at Shustoke Reservoir with Steve on Friday evening. At one stage we had up to 7 Common Terns as well. Also a Common Sandpiper.
Things seemed a bit quiet on the birding front around the region yesterday morning and it was very hot, so we set off for a nice stroll round in the sunshine at Ladywalk NR, not really expecting too much. Highlights were 4 singing Garden Warblers showing really well, Willow Warblers, a Little Egret, 2 Oystercatchers, 1 Common Sandpiper, Lapwing, Reed Warbler, Sedge Warbler and Blackcap.
So amid some fairly sedate birding from River Walk Hide, we hear news that a White Winged Black Tern was seen at Draycote Water this morning. The twitch was on and less than an hour later we were a watching said bird - a White Winged Black Tern (lifer 218)! Outstanding bird it was too. Even though it was quite a distance away most of the time, it was very striking, making the 3 Black Terns it was with look quite dull in comparison. When we left the sun was blazing and the twtch was getting bigger and bigger. I still can't believe I've seen this...

Well done Kay. Black Terns are always good to see, especially in the spring. But White-Winged Black Tern is a little bit special! Same with Whiskered Tern if you get the chance.
